What are Penny Stocks?
There are no single metrics to describe penny stocks but you can consider the stocks whose price is low, the market cap is less than Rs. 5000 Crore, etc. can be considered as a penny stock.
If the price of any stock is very low like Rs. 10, 15, etc. and the stock’s market cap is also lower than Rs. 5000 Cr. Usually, penny stocks are very volatile and fall and move up very rapidly in different market conditions, news, etc.
On the other side if the stock or company market cap is very high but the stock price is near Ex. 50, 100, etc. then it is not a penny stock. In a few words, in most cases, the stock price does not matter. You have to check company financials to know which stock is penny stock or not.
There is a problem in the penny stocks i.e. it is very hard to buy and sell because of the low trading volume. So, if you are buying or selling any penny stock in large quantity then it can be very difficult to buy and sell the stock at the desired price.
▶ Investing in Penny Stocks
Most retail investors prefer to invest in penny stocks and mid-cap stocks to get very high or multi-bagger returns. Most probably they make these types of decisions because of a lack of knowledge of the stock market.
During the market crash, the penny stocks crashed a lot of during the bull run they gave good profit as well. According to data only 60-70% of penny stock companies will survive in the future and the rest will give negative returns.
So, do not invest in penny stocks to get higher returns in most cases you may face higher losses. If you still want to invest in a penny stock and have the potential to take some risk then you should also invest maximum money in large-cap stock.
Investing in large-cap stock will keep most of the capital safe during the market crash or any problem in any specific stock.
While investing in penny stocks always make sure you are investing in those stocks which are industry leaders, fundamentally strong and stable, future scope in the sector, etc.
